Warning stickers are being placed on some pay phones in Calgary in a bid to keep drug dealers from using them for criminal activities.
The stickers will be put on 30 pay phones as part of a pilot project.
"Our public telephones have been an ongoing issue in our communities and were being used by drug dealers to communicate anonymously," Ald. John Mar said in a statement.
The program was launched Wednesday afternoon.
The stickers say: "Warning. In support of investigations into illegal activities, all numbers dialled from this phone along with the date and time of the call will be provided to the Calgary Police Service and other agencies as requested by subpoena. Keep Calgary clean and safe."
Furthermore, pay phone users will be able to dial only 911 between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.
The pay phones selected for the pilot are in Calgary's city centre, described as downtown, East Village, Stampede Park, East Victoria Crossing, Victoria Crossing Centre, Connaught Centre, West Connaught, West End, Eau Claire and Chinatown.
The pilot program is based on a similar one in California where the stickers carry a similar warning.
